Terps Tied for 17th at NCAA Regional

ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Matt Schall led Maryland with a 4-over-par 76, while sophomore transfer Chris Gold was in contention for an individual berth to the NCAA Championships in Friday's second round of the 2007 NCAA East Regional Men's Golf Tournament.

The event is being hosted by Georgia Tech at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course.

Gold was tied for 20th individually after 36 holes with a 146 total after he shot a 77 on Friday. With Maryland teeing off on the 10th hole Friday, Gold went 1-over over his final 11 holes to stay in the hunt for an individual berth to the nationals, which will be held May 30 to June 2 in Williamsburg, Va.

The top 10 teams and two players not on qualifying teams advance to nationals. In those spots heading into the final round are Brian Rozier of Jacksonville State, who was tied for fifth at 143, and Robert Rohanna of Penn State, who was tied for 11th at 145. Rozier and Gold will be in the same threesome in Saturday's final round.

Schall had the best round of the day for the Terrapins with his 76 on Friday. He went 1-under over the final 12 holes in his round, including three birdies in that stretch. Schall, a senior who is one of only two Terps ever to appear in four NCAA postseason events, was tied for 56th overall with a 150 total.

Also for Maryland, Skip Clasper had a 78 for a 152 total and was tied for 71st, Tyler Witman posted a 157 total for a tie for 108th after a 79 on Friday and J.J. Occi was tied for 135th with a 165 total.

Maryland had a 310 team score on Friday and fell to a tie for 17th with Chattanooga with a 605 total. The Terrapins are 13 strokes out of a qualifying spot in the team standings. Currently, Florida State and Clemson are tied for ninth at 592, with Central Florida and Georgia State one stroke back.

Georgia leads the team standings at 574, with Florida in second at 575 and Auburn three strokes back after posting the best team score of the day with a 284.

Individually, Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech continued to top the leader board, using his 70 on Friday to post a two-round total of 7-under-par 137. Georgia's Brendon Todd was in second two strokes behind, while Chris Kirk of Georgia and Billy Horschel of Florida were tied for third at 142.

Maryland will begin Saturday's final round at 12:12 p.m. and will tee off on the first hole. The Terrapins will be paired with Chattanooga and Jacksonville State.
