SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The University of Maryland men's golf team shot its best score of the season in today's final round but had to settle for sixth place at the 2002 Wofford Invitational. The Terps' three-under-par third-round 285, Maryland's first sub-par round of the spring and best score since a 283 in the 2001 ODU/Seascape Invitational first round, broke a second-round tie for sixth with host school Wofford but failed to gain on the tournament's leaders. Maryland finished with a total of 888, while ACC rival Virginia won the team championship by one stroke over East Carolina with a two-under-par 862 total.

After only 16 sub-par scores in the first two rounds, 22 individuals, including four Terps, shot under par in the third and final round. Terrapin senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.), the defending champion at this event, recorded a two-under-par 70 to grab a share of 15th place. His total of 218 stood 11 shots behind individual champion Steve Marino of Virginia (207). Brigham has shot under par in five of his last seven rounds.

The Terps' second individual total was recorded by junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio), whose final-round 71 was his best score of the spring season. A pair of Terrapins, freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.), tied for 35th at 225 after shooting final-round 71s. Fenstermaker recorded the second-best total among individual competitors.

Rounding out the scoring for Maryland were sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.), who tied for 37th at 226, and senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.), who tied for 39th after shooting his best round of the spring with a one-over-par 73.

The Terps return to action Friday with the first round of the ACC Championships at The Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C.
