GREENSBORO, N.C. - John Eades fired an opening-round 72 to lead the University of Maryland to a tie for third place in the team standings Monday at the rain-shortened Bridgestone Golf Intercollegiate men's tournament being held at the Forest Oaks Country Club.
Eades was tied for ninth in the individual standings after the completion of the first round. Maryland had four players in the top 20, with Matt Schall, Tyler Witman and Blaine Peffley all finishing at 73 and in a tie for 12th place. Tully Coyle was tied for 35th at 76.
As a team, Maryland fired a 291 total, tying with Wichita State for third place. Lamar University was in first place at 281, with Xavier in second at 284.
Oliver Bekker of Lamar shot a 6-under-par 66 to take the individual lead, with Andy Pope of Xavier in second at 68. Only eight players broke par in the first round on Monday.
The second round was cancelled by rain. Play in the third and final round will begin on Tuesday morning.
