KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Chris Gold shot a 3-under-par 33 on the back nine to finish a 71 to tie for fifth and lead University of Maryland finishers Sunday in the first round of the Cuthbert Cup men's golf tournament being hosted by the College of Charleston.
Maryland's men's team was in sixth place after the first of three rounds in the tournament, which had the men playing Osprey Point in the opening 18 holes.
The event is opening the Spring 2008 schedule for the Terrapins. It is being played on the same courses as the women's section of the Cuthbert Cup. Maryland's women were in fourth in the team standings after Sunday's opening round.
Gold was one of seven golfers to finish under par in the opening round. Four players also matched Gold's back-nine 33 at the top of the leader board. Andres Cuenca of Western Carolina was the individual leader after the opening round with a 5-under-par 67.
Maryland's men also got a 73 from Andrew Kay, who was tied for 12th overall, while Brendan Tracy shot a 36 on the back nine to finish in a tie for 26th at 75. Donnie Shin was tied for 40th at 77 and Tom Hanna III shot an 85 to tie for 61st.
The Terrapins were just one shot out of fifth place and finished the opening round just four shots off the team lead, being shared by Western Carolina, Washington State and Richmond.
The men will play Cougar Point at Kiawah Island on Monday, with the women shifting to Osprey Point.
