AUBURN, Ala. - University of Maryland is in a tie for 22nd place after the first round of the 54-hole NCAA East Regional here at Auburn University Club.

The Terps, who played under rainy conditions for most of the day, shot a 23-over-par 311 total. Junior Tim Kane was the Terps' low man, shooting a three-over 75 on the par 72 course. Freshman John Eades and senior John Moheyer both carded 77s. Sophomore Bobby MacWhinnie shot an 82 and Dan MacDonald turned in an 85.

"We have our work cut out for us," said Maryland head coach Tom Hanna after the opening day. "This is the second straight year we played our opening round in heavy rain. But we still have two rounds to turn things around."

The top 10 teams in each of the NCAA's three regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Stillwater, Okla.
