Freshmen Lead Men's Golf to Fourth at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A pair of freshmen had the low rounds of the day to lead the University of Maryland to fourth place in the team standings Saturday after the opening round of the Navy Fall Invitational men's golf tournament.

Newcomer Andrew Kay had a 1-over-par round of 72 to lead the Terrapins and end the day in a tie for sixth place individually. Freshman Donnie Shin, a local product from Columbia, Md., had a 75 to tie for 18th after the first round.

As a team, Maryland ended the day with a 301 total, just four shots behind Seton Hall. NC State shot a 279 in the first round to take a 17-shot lead over Delaware and post the only team round under par.

Also for the Terrapins, Chris Gold and Brendan Tracy each fired 77s to tie for 33rd place, with Tom Hanna in a tie for 47th with a 78.

Playing individually, J.J. Occi and freshman Jake Daly also fired 78s, while Adam Cohn had an 82 to tie for 73rd individually.

The Wolfpack held the top three spots in the individual standings, with Andrew Byrd leading after a 67 on Saturday, while teammates Adam Hogue and Hertzog Landman shot 68 to tie for second.

The second round will be played on Sunday.
