Schall Fires 72 to Lead Terps at NCAA Golf

ORLANDO, Fla. - Matt Schall fired an even-par round of 72 to lead University of Maryland players Friday during the second round of the NCAA East Regional men's golf championship being played at the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.

Schall was in a tie for 39th place with a 149 total after two rounds. He began the day in a tie for 80th place and had a strong round despite more difficult conditions that added nearly a full stroke the the field's scoring average.

The Terrapin junior, who usually plays in the fifth spot in the lineup, started on the 10th hole and bogeyed the 13th. He rallied with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th, then parred 10 of the remaining 11 holes to shoot Maryland's best round of the tournament thus far.

As a team, Maryland was in 23rd place after two rounds. The Terrapins posted a team score of 312 on Friday for a two-day total of 167. Maryland was three shots behind Liberty and George Washington, which were tied for 21st.

Also for the Terrapins on Friday, Tyler Witman fired his second straight 77 for a 154 total and a tie for 85th place. Blaine Peffley had a 157 total after 36 holes and was tied for 105th, while John Eades was tied for 124th at 160. Tully Coyle was tied for 131st at 163.

Top-seeded Georgia led the team standings after two days at 578. The Bulldogs were two strokes ahead of UNLV and three ahead of Wake Forest. USC and UCLA were tied for ninth at 592 in the battle for the top 10 positions and qualifying spots in the NCAA National Championships, to be held at the end of the month in Sunriver, Ore. Georgia State was at 596 and in 11th place.

Individually, Taylor Wood of USC fired a 69 on Friday to take the top spot on the leaderboard. He had a 5-under-par total of 139 after two rounds and led by two strokes over first-round leader Jonathan Jackson of North Carolina, who had a 74 on Friday, and Jarred Texter of UNLV.

Maryland will tee off on No. 1 in Saturday's final round, with the first Terrapin tee time at 12:59 p.m.
