KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Freshman Sean Bosdosh leads the Maryland men's golf team and most of the field at The Invitational at Ocean Course with a second place finish after two rounds. The Clarksburg, Md., native completed the first day of play with a two-under-par 142 (71-71). The Terps are currently in 11th place with a team score of 612 (307-305).
The tournament resumes tomorrow for the final round of competition. Also representing Maryland at the invitational are seniors Andrew Kay and Tom Hanna, juniors John Popeck and Joey Rice and sophomore Will Wiseman.
Last season Popeck led the team five times and earned five top-20 finishes, two in the top-10. Before coming to Maryland, Bosdosh claimed the crown in this year's 89th Maryland Amateur this past weekend on the Golf Course at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. He is now the youngest champion in Amateur history.
Following the road tournament, the Terps return home to host the Maryland Intercollegiate at the Hyatt River Marsh Golf Club September 18 and 19. Last year Popeck and Sean Brannan finished top-20 in the challenging field which included multiple Atlantic Coast Conference members.
At the end of the month, the Terrapins return to Rehoboth Beach, Del., for the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invite. Last season in the spring Maryland claimed the crown for the second straight season. Popeck led the Terps with a second place finish at the one-day tournament with a one-under-par 141.
October has Maryland taking a trip to ACC country in Raleigh, N.C., for the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on the 4th and 5th. The following weekend the Terps close out their fall slate in Akron, Ohio, at the Firestone Invitational. Last fall Maryland competed only as individuals. Senior Andrew Kay was the team's top performer coming in fifth.
