Balanced Scoring Helps Terps at Palmetto

AIKEN, S.C. - Tyler Witman posted a 5-over-par total of 145 to tie for 11th place and lead University of Maryland players Monday at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate men's golf tournament being hosted by South Carolina-Aiken at the Palmetto Golf Club.

Witman, a Terrapin senior, fired rounds of 72 and 73 on the par-70 layout on Monday. His score was two shots better than fellow senior Hunter Bendall, who was tied for 20th at 147 and three shots better than senior Matt Schall (74-74--148) and sophomore transfer Chris Gold (76-72--148), who finished the day tied for 24th.

As a team, Maryland was in fifth place after 36 holes with a 588 total. Maryland was within two shots of third-place Elon and one strokes behind East Carolina. Virginia Tech led the team standings at 573 after the opening day, with USC-Aiken in second at 581.

Also for Maryland, Skip Clasper was tied for 71st at 158 while playing as an individual, with J.J. Occi in 83rd at 167.

Andre Thorsen of East Carolina , Jimmy Lytle of Elon and Matt Burroughs of USC-Aiken were tied for the individual lead after 36 holes at 140.

The final round of the 54-hole event will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
