Terps Place Third in Men's Golf Opener

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Tyler Witman finished in a tie for fifth place overall to lead the University of Maryland to a third-place team finish Tuesday at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate men's golf tournament hosted by UNC Greensboro.

Witman finished with a 7-under-par total of 209, a career-low for 54 holes. His finish was highlighted with a 6-under-par 66 in Monday's second round of the tournament, also a career-low round for the Terrapin junior.

Tully Coyle of Maryland also earned a top-20 finish, tying for 12th at 213 after shooting a 67 in Tuesday's final round. John Eades tied for 21st at 215 after opening the tournament with a blistering 65 and tying for the low individual round in the field for all three days.

Also for Maryland, J.J. Occi was tied for 40th at 219, while Hunter Bendall tied for 82nd at 229.

As a team, the Terrapins finished at 851 over the three days, finishing 37 shots better than their team total in the same event a year ago. Charlotte won the team title at 842, one shot better than Lamar.

Individually, Chadd Cocco of Saint Mary's was the medalist, finishing with rounds of 71-66-69 for a 206 total. He won by one shot over Dawie VanDerWalt of Lamar.

Maryland plays next on Oct. 3 and 4 at the VCU Invitational in Richmond, Va.
