Witman Leads Terps After First Day at VCU

RUTHER GLEN, Va. - Tyler Witman fired rounds of 70 and 71 on Monday to earn a tie for ninth place individually and lead University of Maryland players after the opening 36 holes of the VCU/Mattaponi Springs Shootout men's golf tournament.

The event is being hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.

Witman was 3-under-par after the first two rounds of the 54-hole event, which wraps up on Tuesday.

As a team, Maryland was in eighth place after Monday's play with a 580 total. Louisville led the 15-team field at 565, one shot ahead of Penn State and Kent State. The Terps were seven strokes behind Xavier in seventh, but only eight shots behind three teams tied for fourth place at 572.

Also for Maryland, freshman Brendan Tracy and senior Matt Schall were tied for 27th at 146, with Tracy finishing the day with a 2-under-par round of 70. Tully Coyle tied for 38th at 147, Kyle Nathan was tied for 74th at 157. Skip Clasper, playing as an individual, was tied for 52nd at 151.

Individually, Marc Bourgeois of Kent State and Dan Woltman of Wisconsin were tied at 135. Woltman opened with a first-round 65, while Bourgeois had rounds of 68 and 67 to join him atop the leaderboard. They were one stroke ahead of Chad Bricker of Penn State and Adam Hadwin of Louisville, heading into Tuesday's final round.
