IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Hunter Bendall fired a final-round score of 2-over-par 74 to finish in a tie for 15th individually and lead the University of Maryland to a sixth-place finish in the Anteater Invitational men's golf tournament on Tuesday.
The event kicked off the Spring 2007 season for the Terrapin men's golf team.
Bendall rallied for a 229 finish in the tournament and led the Terps to a sixth-place finish in the team standings. Maryland started the day in seventh but shot 306 to finish at 920 and move up one spot in the field, which included West Coast teams except for the Terps.
Bendall has made the most of his recent spot in the lineup, having played in four straight tournaments for Maryland after playing in 12 over the previous two years. He also led Maryland at the Coca Cola Duke Classic in the fall season.
Tyler Witman also earned a top-20 finish for the Terrapins, placing 19th individually with a 231 total over the 54-hole event. Chris Gold, a transfer from Texas Tech, tied for 24th for Maryland at 233, with Matt Schall tying for 28th at 234. Kyle Nathan rallied for a final-round 76 for the Terps to tie for 45th at 242. Skip Clasper, playing as an individual, tied for 31st at 235.
Domingo Jojola of USF won the individual title, shooting a 71 on Tuesday for a 212 total. He won medalist honors by four strokes over Kenny Kim of UC Irvine.
The host Anteaters won the team championship with a three-round total of 884. UC Irvine shot a 288 on the final day, the best team round of the tournament. Arizona was second at 903 with Saint Mary's in third at 912.
Maryland plays next on March 12 and 13 at the USC Aiken Invitational.
