MacDonald in Top 10 at Cavalier Tourney

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Dan MacDonald fired a 71 and 73 to post an even-par total of 144 after the opening two rounds Friday of the Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic men's golf tournament being played at the Birdwood Golf Course.

MacDonald was in a tie for ninth individually after 36 holes, leading the Terrapins to sixth place in the team standings with 18 holes to play on Saturday. Maryland had a 593 total after Friday's action, five shots behind host Virginia and leading a pack of four teams that were within five shots. The Terps had a strong 291 total Friday morning in the opening round.

Also for Maryland, junior Bobby MacWhinnie opened with a 71 en route to a 147 total and a tie for 18th place individually. Freshman Matt Schall, seeing his first action of the season, carded a 74-76--150 to tie for 27th. Fellow Terp freshman Tyler Witman was at 154 and a tie for 46th after two rounds, with sophomore John Eades in a tie for 50th at 155.

Furman led the team standings with a 573 total that included a 285 in the second round. UNC Wilmington was four shots back with North Carolina in third at 578 and a national team from Italy in fourth at 579.

Individually, T.J. Blandford of Furman and Andrea Signor of Italy were tied at 139 after 36 holes. Seven players were within three shots of the lead heading into Saturday.
