April 21, 2002

UWHARRIE POINT, N.C. - Behind the final-round play of senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) and freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the University of Maryland men's golf team matched its best score of the season en route to an eighth-place finish at the 49th annual ACC Championship at Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. No. 1-ranked Georgia Tech led the conference field wire-to-wire to win its second straight ACC title and gain the conference's automatic NCAA Championship bid with a 27-under-par total of 837. North Carolina State (841) finished four shots back in second place and Clemson (845) was third.

Maryland's 11-over-par total of 875 was its best ACC score since the 1998 team also totaled 875. The Terps' three-under-par third round of 285, highlighted by scores in the 60s from Brigham and MacWhinnie, propelled them into eighth place for the second time in three years.

North Carolina's Dustin Bray led the individual race start-to-finish and earned medalist honors with an 11-under-par 205 total, two shots ahead of Georgia Tech's Matt Weibring and Nicholas Thompson.

Brigham shot a four-under 68 in the final round to tie for 15th. Brigham's 214 total was his best in three ACC Championships. He finished with a two-under-par total for the third time in Maryland's last four tournaments and now leads the team with eight sub-par rounds.

MacWhinnie gave the Terps their first round of the spring with two individuals scoring in the 60s by shooting a three-under-par 69. He finished his first ACC Championship with a total of 218, tying for 23rd along with junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio). Moheyer shot a final-round 74 to claim his first top-25 finish of the spring.

Rounding out the Terps' scoring, sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) finished 42nd with a 226 total and senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) finished 45th at 243.

The Terps return to action April 27 with the first day of competition at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course in State College, Pa.
