COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Two University of Maryland men's golfers earned spots in the upcoming Maryland State Golf Association Amateur and open Championships with solid qualifying rounds recently.
Tom Hanna, a sophomore for the Terrapins, placed second in an 80-player field with an even-par 71 at Winters Run on May 4. Hanna's 71 included a chip-in eagle at the 547-yard sixth hole. Cuts at Winters Run were at 78 for the Amateur and 76 for the Open.
Joey Rice, who just finished his freshman season with the Terps, shot 4-over-par 76 to tie for 11th in qualifying at Lake Presidential Golf Club. The cut line fell at 77 for the Open and 80 for the Amateur.
The MSGA Amateur Championship will be held June 4-7 at Chevy Chase Club in Bethesda, with the MSGA Open Championship on July 13-15 at Hillendale CC in Phoenix.
