WALLACE, N.C. - John Popeck shot back-to-back rounds of 70 to post a 4-under par 140 over the first day at the River Landing Intercollegiate. Just two strokes back of the leader, Popeck is tied for third and paced the Terrapins on their way to a 12th-place standing after Day One.
Chris Gold matched Popeck's 2-under round of 70 on the first loop, but followed that up with a two-over 74 to finish at even par, tied for 14th overall.
Chris Miller had one of the best turnarounds of the day. His first round score of 83 left him alone in 84th place, but he followed that up with a 12-stroke improvement, shooting a 1-under 71 to finish tied for 63rd.
Overall, the Terps shot a 21-over as a team, 34 strokes behind the leaders, NC State.
The event wraps up with 18 holes on Saturday.
