Terps Place Fifth in Rain-Shortened Event

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rain wiped out Tuesday's scheduled final round of the Memphis Intercollegiate men's golf tournament with the University of Maryland finishing fifth as a team after Monday's 36 holes of action.

The Terrapins had a two-round total of 599 in the event, which was closely contested. Eight teams were within three shots of the team lead after Monday's first round, and seven schools finished within a dozen strokes of eventual champion Ohio State at 588.

Host Memphis was second at 591, with Mississippi State in third at 594.

John Popeck continued his strong play during the fall season, as the freshman again finished as Maryland's low scorer. Popeck opened with an even-par 72, then followed with a 73 to finish in a tie for fifth overall at 145.

Also for the Terrapins, sophomore Donnie Shin tied for 33rd at 152, senior Chris Gold shot 153 and tied for 44th, Tom Hanna III closed with a 73 on Monday for a 158 total and a tie for 69th, with Andrew Kay finishing at 160.

Vaughn Snyder of Ohio State won medalist honors with rounds of 68 and 70 for a 6-under-par total of 138. He won by six strokes over Mark-Ettienne Bussieres of South Alabama, Sean Dale of Ole Miss and Sebastian MacLean of Xavier.

Maryland plays next at the Xavier Invitational on Oct.13 and 14.
