COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Seniors Maxine Fluharty, Katie Gerzabek and junior Sarah Sprink will serve as captains of the Maryland field hockey team for the 2014 season.

"Maxine, Katie and Sarah are a talented dynamic, hardworking leadership trio,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “The front field, the midfield, the backfield are represented by these NCAA/FIH experienced players. All have been honored by their leagues and all three represented their countries in the Junior World Cup. They understand that the way we train and prepare puts us in position to win championships in November."

These three will have a more important leadership role as they help lead the Terrapins into a new and exciting league in the Big Ten.

“I cannot wait for us to take the field and push each other so we get the best out of everyone each and every practice and game,” Gerzabek said. “In our spring season we took a lot of steps both individually and as a team. I think everyone really worked hard and improved their individual game. I'm so excited to take all of these improvements and compete for championships this upcoming season.”

“The playing style is a little different in the Big Ten so I am excited to take what we already have and keep improving and building on the Maryland brand of field hockey.”

When asked what leadership means, Sprink said, “Inclusion means everyone knows what unique and important part they play on the team, and in what ways they help the team be great.”

“I am very excited to join the Big Ten. The way we will play is exciting. We will use the entire team to attack and defend together. Even though we think we know what is coming, we actually are clueless as to how this new journey will turn out. We have complete faith in each other and in our style of hockey.”

“We have an immense amount of natural talent within each of the girls along with passion and energy,” Fluharty said. “I am excited to be joining the Big Ten. I think it will have a different atmosphere but there is nothing more thrilling than being challenged in new ways.”
