PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Maryland softball team closed out the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a pair of losses Saturday night to No. 8 UCLA and Cal Poly.

Game 1 -- No. 8 UCLA 10, Maryland 5

Senior Amanda McCann went 2-for-4 in the effort, while Erin Pronobis crossed the plate twice with strong production from the backend of the lineup as Maryland fell to No. 8 UCLA, 10-5.

The Bruins struck first in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a Terrapin fielding error to put up a two-run opening frame.

Maryland answered right back in the top of the second, however, when Candice Beards laced a leadoff double to the fence and freshman Kylie Datil followed with a walk. Juli Strange then knocked in Beards with an RBI single to cut the Terrapin deficit in half, 2-1.

Corey Schwartz continued the inning by advancing Datil and Strange with a sacrifice bunt. The nine-hitter Pronobis tied the game with an RBI, followed by a go-ahead RBI single by McCann. Maryland tacked on a fourth and final run with a passed ball to take a 4-2 advantage.

After UCLA answered with a run in the third, it regained the lead with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-4 lead. The Bruins then put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the sixth.

The Terps scraped a run across the plate in the top of the seventh on a Lindsey Schmeiser sacrifice fly, but could do no more damage as the game ended.

Game 2 - Cal Poly 4, Maryland 0

Maryland received little offensive production in the nightcap Saturday as it fell to Cal Poly, 4-0, in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic finale.

Redshirt freshman Brenna Nation allowed just two earned runs in four innings of work, while Kaitlyn Schmeiser and Jaymie Bautista-Geiger closed out the game from the circle.

Cal Poly jumped on the board first with the eventual game-winning run when Ashley Romano knocked home Kim Westlund with a two-out RBI single.

The Mustangs added a pair of runs in the fourth inning and an insurance run in the fifth to take a 4-0 advantage.

Maryland returns to action next weekend at the Citrus Classic in Kissimmee, Fla., where it will take on Nebraska-Omaha, Radford, Auburn, Oregon and Florida.
