ATLANTA - The Maryland softball team pounded the defending ACC champion Georgia Tech, 14-5, Sunday to take the series in a run-rule win in Atlanta.
With the win, the Terps (23-22, 7-5 ACC) picked up their first series win over the Yellow Jackets (19-24, 6-6) since 2001. Georgia Tech has won three of the last four ACC titles.
The Terrapins jumped on the Jacket early with three runs in the top of the first. Amanda McCann drew a leadoff walk, then Sara Acosta moved her over the second with a ground out. Lindsey Schmeiser brought in the first run with an RBI single. Candice Beards doubled to score Schmeiser, then Lexi Carrollsingled to score Beards.
Georgia Tech countered with three runs in the bottom of the first to tie it up. Ashley Thomas and Alysha Rudnik both walked, then Katie Johnsky homered to score three runs.
Maryland took a 5-3 lead in the second when Acosta singled, then Lindsey Schmeiser homered to left. The Jacket made it 5-4 with an RBI single by Thomas in the bottom of the second, then the Terps tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Melissa Mancuso and Juli Strangedrew back to back walks to start the inning. Acosta reached on an error with Mancuso and Strange on second and third and both scored on the play to make it 7-4.
Georgia Tech's Caitlyn Coffey homered in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-5.
The Terrapin offense exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth. Strange, Bridget Hawvermale and McCann drew three straight walks to load the bases at the start of the inning. Acosta brought one in on a fielder's choice that left runners on first and third. Hawvermale scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-5. Acosta scored off a Jackets' error, then Shannon Bustilloshit a two-run homer to make it 12-5. Beards hit her second double of the day, then Carroll hit another two-run homer to make it 14-5.
Next, the Terrapins will welcome Boston College (10-26, 1-11) to College Park for the three-game series next weekend. They will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission and parking are both free for the weekend.
