On Sweeney: Anchor in the outfield … tremendous speed … finds several ways to get on base by either power hitting or slap bunting … Maryland’s career leader in batting average (.332), stolen bases (28) and triples (4).

As a Redshirt Sophomore in 2002: Had one of the best seasons in Maryland softball history … named to both the All-ACC team and NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region second team … finished sixth in the ACC in batting average (.350) and eighth in hits (62), seventh in triples (4), third in stolen bases (25), and eighth in on-base percentage (.425) … led her teammates in all of these categories … placed on many of Maryland’s single-season leaders lists, including batting average (1st), stolen bases (1st), runs scored (5th), hits (tied for 4th), and triples (1st) … completed six assists from the outfield … put together a career-high 20 multiple-hit games … hit hot streak in the beginning of April, collecting hits in 10 straight games (April 6-21) … collected 16 hits against ACC opponents … awarded ACC Player of the Week honors for Feb. 11 after batting .533 with a .611 on-base percentage during the Bama Bash … named to Bama Bash and George Mason Spring Clash all-tournament teams … staked Maryland to an early lead after doubling in two runs in the second inning against Delaware (March 14) … went 7-for-14 (.500) with two stolen bases, three doubles and five runs scored against ACC foes at the Tar Heel Invitational (April 6-7) … claimed the Terrapins’ first hit in the new Terrapin Softball Complex (April 10) … had a 6-for-8 performance with two triples, four runs scored, and two RBI in a doubleheader against local rival George Mason (April 17) … was perfect at the plate (4-for-4 with a double and RBI) in a conference win over North Carolina (April 27).

As a Sophomore in 2001: Medical redshirt season … a member of Maryland’s 2000-01 Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.

As a Freshman in 2000: Began season as the starting left fielder and leadoff hitter… suffered an injury from a wild pitch in the fourth game of the season vs. Georgia at the Louisville Slugger Tournament (Feb. 5) … injury to eye and later injuries to knee and elbow forced her to miss a total of 24 games … led squad with a .398 on-base percentage and finished second in steals (3) in limited time … also paced the Terps with a .381 batting average in conference games and finished second among starters overall (.297) … tied for sixth with 15 runs scored … garnered all-tournament honors at the Louisville Slugger tourney, going 3-for-11 (.272) while scoring twice, making 13 putouts and stealing a base to help the Terps to a third-place finish … stole bases against Tennessee (Feb. 5), Bethune-Cookman (March 17) and Virginia (April 23) … recorded a season-high three base hits in a single game vs. Bethune-Cookman … posted eight multi-hit games … established a five-game hit streak before and after first injury from Feb. 5 (Tennessee) to March 9 (South Carolina) … was 8-for-15 (.533) with four runs scored and two RBI during that streak … suffered knee injury vs. Georgia Tech (March 21) and missed 14 games … came back to go 5-for-12 (.417) with two runs scored in doubleheaders against conference rivals North Carolina (April 14) and then-No. 24 East Carolina (April 16) … dislocated left elbow in warmups at the ACC Tournament and sat out the remainder of the season.

Before Maryland: A graduate of Cherokee High School in 1999 … earned three letters as a member of the varsity softball team … also earned two letters as a member of the basketball team and one letter as a member of the gymnastics team … a standout member of the track and field team … named all-state, All-South Jersey and all-conference in softball during her career … helped lead Cherokee High to the 1996 state championship and the 1998 South Jersey Group IV state championship … all-state first team in track and field … was the 1999 Group IV state champion in the long jump and jumped a career best of 18’1” in the event.

Personal: Born Aug. 9, 1981 … Samantha is the daughter of Pamela Benjamin and David Sweeney … is the oldest of four children … she has two younger brothers, David Jr. (18) and Darnell (12), and a younger sister, Shemair (19) … a member of the French Club and received honors as a student in the language of Latin ... majoring in psychology.
