COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Kerry Hickey of the Maryland softball team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Pitcher of the Week the league announced Tuesday for her performance in the Terps' 4-1 week beginning last Wednesday. She was honored with the weekly award for the third time in her career and first this season.
Hickey threw her ninth career no-hitter, and first this year, Saturday in game one of a doubleheader against ACC opponent Virginia Tech. The Terps won 7-0 behind Hickey's performance of one walk and nine strikeouts in seven innings. She went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the game with a run, a double and an RBI.
Over Maryland's week, Hickey carried an ERA of 0.37 and opponents batted just .097 against her. In 19.0 innings in three appearances in the circle, she gave up just six hits and three runs, with just one being earned. On the year, Hickey carries an ERA of 1.72.
She batted in all five of the Terps' games. Hickey hit .500 on the week with six hits, including two doubles and a triple. She scored two runs and brought in five RBI.
This is the fourth time this season a Terrapin has been honored with a conference weekly award. Sophomore pitcher Kendra Knight has been honored as Pitcher of the Week twice and senior Alex Schultz was named Player of the Week once.
The Terrapins will head south for a series against No. 23 North Carolina over the weekend. They will start a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. as well.
