COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Maddie Martin threw a perfect game and the Terrapin offense powered past Howard to take two games in a doubleheader at Robert E. Taylor Stadium Wednesday. The Terps won game one 20-0 for the largest margin of victory since 1996 and game two, 13-0.

Martin didn't allow the Lady Bison a runner in her first perfect game as a Terrapin. She picked up five strikeouts in her five innings of work. Senior Lexi Carroll kept it up as she held Howard without a base runner through 3.2 innings. In her first appearance in the circle, freshman Samantha Schweickhardt sent the Lady Bison down 1-2-3 to end the second game.

The Terrapins (16-16, 3-0 ACC) outhit Howard (3-15), 25-0. Senior Nikki Maier led the way with five hits in her six at-bats.

Junior Amanda McCann started the 12-run first inning explosion for the Terps with a leadoff walk. She stole second and Sara Acosta drew another walk. Freshman Lindsey Schmeiser drove in the first run with an RBI single. A few batters later, Maier reached on an error with the bases loaded to bring in a second run. Candice Beards tripled to clear the bases and make it 5-0 with no outs. Mandy Gardner drove in Beards with a groundout.

The Terrapins hit through the order in the first, and in her second at-bat, Schmeiser singled up the middle to score two more runs. After a Howard pitching change, Maier singled up the middle to make it 10-0. Beards would bring in another run off an error and Gardner made it 12-0 at the end of the first with an RBI base hit.

The Maryland offense kept it up with eight more runs off six hits and one Lady Bison error in the bottom of the second. Freshman Juli Strange and McCann led off with back-to-back singled, then Acosta brought them in with a triple to right. Schmeiser doubled to score Acosta and make it 15-0. Maier singled to score Schmeiser. With the bases loaded, freshman Corey Schwartz drew a walk, then senior Melissa Mancuso hit a sac fly. McCann drew a bases loaded walk and Acosta tacked on a run with a groundout to make it 20-0.

To start the second game, Carroll struck out the side looking. She did not allow a hit in her 4.0 innings and allowed one walk with seven strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, Schmeiser and Bustillos grounded out with runners on to score two runs. In the bottom of the second, Beards walked, then Schwartz doubled to put runners on the corners with one out. McCann singled to add a third run. Acosta got on with a bunt single, then stole second. She moved to third on the next play when Lindsey Schmeiser walked. Acosta stole home on a double steal play as Schmeiser stole second.

Maier led off the bottom of the third with a deep home run to center. McCann hit a sac fly to make it 7-0. In the fourth, Schmeiser led off with a base hit up the middle, then Bustillos homered to center to make it 9-0. Maier got on with a hard hit back to the pitcher. Beards brought her in with a double. Bridget Hawvermale reached on an error to score two more runs. She scored when McCann reached on an error to make it 13-0.

Next, the Terrapins will welcome Florida State (26-10, 5-1) to College Park for a three-game series this weekend. The Terps and the Seminoles will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game Sunday at noon. Admission and parking are free for all games.
