Strange's Two Walk-Offs Lift Terps to Wins

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team hit .508 with 30 hits and 26 RBI Tuesday night to take both games in a doubleheader vs. Hampton. The Terrapins won the first game, 14-6 and the second 13-5, each in six innings.

Freshman Nikki Maier went 5-for-7 on the night with a home run and two doubles. In all, nine Terrapins had multi-hit games.

In the first game, Hampton (11-14) scored first with an RBI double by Taylor McCoy in the top of the first. Maryland (8-14) answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Candice Beards hit an double to tie the game, then Maier homered to the left corner to score three more.

In the bottom of the second, Strange led off with a double, then junior Sara Acosta popped one up to score McCann and make it 6-1.

Sophomore Shannon Bustillos hit a lead-off single. After a hit by junior Mandy Gardner and a walk by senior Melissa Mancuso, Strange brought in another run with a sacrifice fly and the bases loaded. McCann reached on an error later in the inning and sophomore Liana Newton, who pinch ran for Gardner, scored to make it 8-1.

The Pirates picked up four runs in the top of the fourth off of two hits and two Maryland errors. All four runs were unearned.

With the score cut to 8-5, Bustillos hit an RBI double down the right field line to score freshman Lindsey Schmeiser, who had led off the inning with a single.

Hampton tacked on another run to make it 9-6 in the top of the fifth off of another RBI double.

Acosta added an RBI single and Bria Taylor.

Freshman Maddie Martin pitched the whole first game. She allowed seven hits, two earned runs and notched six strikeouts. In the second game, Gardner homered over the Terrapins' scoreboard in centerfield to make it a 2-0 ballgame in the bottom of the second. The Pirates tied it up in the top of the third off a double and a pair of base hits.

The Terps added four more runs for a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third. Acosta got on with a bunt single, then Melissa Mancuso brought in the fourth run.

Maryland added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth off of doubles by Lindsey Schmeiser and Maier. Hampton added three runs to cut it to 9-5 off of two hits.

In the bottom of the sixth, with the score at 11-5, Strange doubled down the leftfield line to end the game at 13-5.

Next, the Terps will head to South Florida's Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. Maryland will play Boston University Friday at 4 p.m. and Oklahoma State at 6:15 p.m. The Terrapins will play Valparaiso and Temple Saturday and Dartmouth Sunday.
