COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team gave up two big innings as the Terps fell to #24 Virginia Tech, 8-1, Saturday afternoon. In the second game, Maryland starter Sarah Dooley pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits, as the Terps defeated the Hokies, 2-1. Maryland moves to 23-8, 1-4 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech moves to 24-10, 6-2 in the ACC.
In the fifth inning of the second game, Maryland's Julie Lofland singled before Whitney Reigel singled to advance pinch runner Krista Gould to second. Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher was called for an illegal pitch, moving both runners up. Senior Jenny Belak singled to short-right field to score the runners and send the Terrapins home with their first ACC win of the season.
Dooley finished with six strikeouts while only allowing two hits, both in the third inning, for her 10th win on the season. Hokie starter Kenzie Roark took the loss and moved to 1-3 on the season.
In the first game, the Terps' run in the fifth inning was the first run surrendered by Hokie starter Angela Tincher in 34 innings in NCAA games, 41 including Tincher's no-hitter of the US National Team in an exhibition game Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. The Hokies used a three-run third and a four-run fifth to power their way to victory.
Belak's three hits on the day now puts her 18 shy of tying the career record for hits at Maryland with 194. Belak also moved into seventh all-time at Maryland with 661 at-bats in her career.
Maryland starter Meredith Nelles (9-2) took the loss, while Tincher improved to 16-4 on the season.
