COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The Maryland softball team will welcome four area schools to College Park this weekend for a round-robin tournament on Saturday Sept. 29. Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington, Delaware State and UMBC are scheduled to play games at Robert E. Taylor Stadium, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, and continuing throughout the day with games starting every two hours.
George Washington and Delaware State are scheduled to kick things off at 8:00 a.m., and Maryland will see its first action at 4 p.m. when they host George Washington.
The Terps will play Georgetown at 6 p.m. in their second game of the day.
Maryland faced all four teams last season, and did not lose a game in those contests. The Terps 6-5 comeback win over the Hoyas at Georgetown was one of the season's most exciting games.
These games will not count towards next season's standings, and the Terrapins will look to get a feel for their 2008 team. Maryland returns 10 players from last year's team which finished 33-26, but will have to replace NCAA home run leader Amber Jackson, as well as the powerful bats of Lindsay Klein and Jennifer Wellborn.
Maryland returns its top pitcher from a year ago in Meredith Nelles, who won 19 games a junior last season. Senior Jenny Belak also returns to give the Terps a reliable bat and speed around the bases.
The Terps welcome six incoming freshman, and will get redshirt freshman Niki Lau back after the outfielder missed all of last year with an injury.
