COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Standout pitching appearances in three Terrapin victories last week earned senior right-hander Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) ACC Softball Player of the Week honors, announced Monday. The second-such accolade of Bettker's career came after the fireballer posted two wins and a save for the Maryland softball team (30-18, 2-3 ACC) in three games while not allowing a single earned run in 17.0 innings.
Bettker struck out seven in a 2-1 victory vs. Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, April 24, before commanding a 3-0 shutout win and her first save of the season across two games at ACC-rival North Carolina on Saturday, April 27. The senior scattered three hits in Game 1 vs. the Tar Heels to mark her seventh shutout of the season, and came on strong with a 3-1 Terp lead in Game 2. In the second game against UNC, Bettker tossed three perfect innings as Maryland eventually notched a 5-1 victory.
The senior fanned a total of 11 batters in the three games and walked only three. The Terps' two conference victories over the Tar Heels boost them in third place in the ACC.
Bettker, a 2001 NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region selection and ACC All-Tournament honoree, is now 13-11 on the season with a 1.37 ERA. She was named ACC Pitcher of the Week once before in her career, after posting three victories at last season's Speedline Invitational.
Bettker and the Terrapins are next in action on Tuesday, April 29, at local-rival Towson. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., before ACC-foe Florida State comes to College Park on Thursday for a 5 p.m. twinbill.
