BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Terrapin softball team moved to 2-2 on the year Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 win over Pittsburgh in eight innings and a 2-0 loss to Mississippi. Strong starting pitching performances once again gave the Terps an edge in both games.
Against the Panthers, sophomore pitcher Kendra Knight threw eight strikeouts in 7.1 innings, while senior Nadine Blackie drove in the winning run. In the Ole Miss game, senior pitcher Kerry Hickey pitched seven solid innings.
"We fought hard today and once against had great performances from our pitching staff," head coach Laura Watten said. "Our offense needs to produce but that will come. Overall, great effort today against two strong teams."
No one made a mark on the scoreboard again until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Pittsburgh's Kristen Cheesebrew doubled to knot the score at 2-2.
In the top of the eighth, freshman Nikki Maier reached on a fielder's choice, allowing McLaughlin to score the go-ahead run. Freshman Melissa Mancuso pinch ran for Maier and scored when Blackie drove in the Terps' fourth and final run.
In game two against Mississippi, Hickey gave up just four runs and tallied six strikeouts. She pitched four hitless innings to keep the game within reach. The Rebels knocked in two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead.
The Terrapins will hit the field again Sunday for their fifth game in the FAU Kick-Off Classic. They will face off against Mississippi at 11 a.m.
