UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The University of Maryland softball team dropped a pair of games to Penn State Wednesday afternoon after Danielle Kinley hit a walk-off, two-run home run to propel PSU over the Terps in the second game, 3-2. In the first game, Penn State's Ashley Esparza hit a two-run home run and pitched a two-hit shutout to defeat the Terps, 7-0. Maryland drops to 30-14 on the season while PSU improves to 30-15.
In the bottom of seventh inning of the second game, Penn State starting pitcher Jackie Hill singled to right field before Hollee Haines tripled to left field to cut the Terps' lead to one. After a strikeout and a groundout, Kinley stepped up and hit a home run over the right field fence to give the Nittany Lions the victory.
In the third inning, Maryland's Whitney Reigel singled to right field and advanced on a Meghan Booth sacrifice bunt. She scored on a Jenny Belak double to left-center field. Senior Sarde Stewart hit her sixth double of the season off the center-field wall to score Belak and give the Terps a 2-0 advantage.
Penn State's Danielle Kinley doubled to lead off the sixth inning before Esparza reached on a fielder's choice. Kayce Zielinski's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Dooley struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Dooley (13-10) finished with nine strikeouts in her ninth complete game of the season. Hill (14-6) finished with four strikeouts to earn the victory.
In the bottom of the first inning of the first game, Penn State's Kinley singled before Esparza homered to right-center field to give the Nittany Lions an early 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game, Penn State's Ashley Griffith singled before an Esparza single to give the Nittany Lions runners at first and third with only one down. Junior Sarah Dooley came on to relieve Maryland starter Lindsey Wright before Zielinski singled to score Griffith.
Penn State's Desi Giordano singled to score pinch runner Carnie Smith to give PSU a 4-0 lead before Sam Hovanec's fielder's choice scored Zielinski. Giordano scored on a wild pitch before Hill hit a sacrifice fly to score Hovanec to finish the scoring for the Nittany Lions in the fifth.
Wright (3-1) finished with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Dooley had two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings of work. Esparza (13-9) finished with six strikeouts and allowed only two hits in her 17th complete game of the year.
With her two appearances today, Dooley has now moved into ninth in the single-season school record books with 34 appearances this season.
The Terps return home Saturday when they play host to Virginia in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Maryland has its Senior Game Sunday at 1 p.m.
