COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Maryland softball team routed Iowa 11-1 Friday evening and fell to No. 7 Alabama 4-1 Friday afternoon in its first two games of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Leadoff Classic tournament. The Terps are now 3-4 on the year moving into Saturday's competition.
Against the Hawkeyes, the Terrapin offense exploded at the plate, scoring in every inning and claiming the win in just five innings. They were led by junior Marisha Branson, who collected three RBI on a bases-loaded triple, and senior Alex Schultz who knocked in two runs.
In the bottom of the first inning, junior Kerry Hickey singled down the right field line to bring in sophomore Kathy McLaughlin to break open the lead. Sophomore Vangie Galindo scored on a Hawkeye error. Schultz singled to score Hickey and then scored when sophomore Michelle Takeda singled to make the score 4-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, freshman Sara Acosta scored on a wild pitch. One play later, McLaughlin, who was on third, was called out at home on senior Nadine Blackie's fielder's choice. Blackie then stole second and scored when Schultz doubled to push the Terrapins' lead to 6-0.
The Hawkeyes got on the board in the top of the third inning, when Chelsea Carmody singled to score Lindsey Digmann from second. Takeda scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third for the Terps' lone run of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Branson tripled with the bases loaded to score Takeda, Schultz, and Blackie.
Seven Terrapins got hits against the Hawkeyes and five collected RBI. Sophomore pitcher Kendra Knight pitched all five innings for the Terps. She collected six strikeouts and gave up just four hits and did not give up any earned runs.
In their first game of the Leadoff Classic, the Terps fell to No. 7 Alabama 4-1 Friday afternoon. Hickey led the way for the Terps with six strikeouts in her 5.2 innings on the mound and a run and a hit at the plate.
After leading 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Terps saw their lead diminish as the Tide scored two runs to take the lead. After allowing the two runs, Knight took the mound to finish the game. The Tide put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning.
For the Terps' run, Hickey got on base in the top of the second inning on a single down the right field line. She scored later in the inning on a wild pitch by Alabama's Charlotte Morgan. Schultz, Branson and Takeda all had hits in the game.
The Terps play Mississippi State Saturday at 4 p.m. and Central Florida at 6:30 p.m. for their third and fourth games in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Gametracker will be available.
