ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Brittany Bessho's triple highlighted a four-run fourth inning as the University of Maryland softball team defeated Villanova 4-0 in the UCF Knight Games Tournament. Later in the day, Kerry Hickey's single to score two runs in the first inning was enough for the Terps as they went on defeat Vermont 7-1. The Terps extend their best start in school history to 11-1.
Maryland's Meghan Booth started off the fourth inning with a single and advanced to second when Sarde Stewart's bunt was thrown into second field by Villanova's Meghan Morese. Hickey came up and singled to left field, but Nova's Jessica Curtis misplayed the ball, allowing Booth to score on the play. Breanna Shaw singled Stewart home and Bessho's triple ended the scoring for the Terps, scoring Hickey and Shaw.
The Terps' starter Meredith Nelles (4-0) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts for the win. Nelles struck out two batters in three out of the first four innings. Hickey only allowed two hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Maryland starter Sarah Dooley (4-1) pitched a complete game only allowing two hits while striking out seven. With the only run being unearned, Dooley lowered her ERA to 0.98
The Catamounts cut the lead to 2-1 in fifth inning when Elena Rizza's sacrifice fly scored Laura Stagliano, but Bessho gunned down Rachelle Boone trying to advance into scoring position to end the threat.
In the fifth inning, Stewart walked and advanced to second on a single to center by Hickey. Bessho singled in Stewart for her third RBI of the day. Hickey and Bessho moved up on the throw home and both scored when Devon Williams fly ball to right field was dropped by Rizza. Alex Schultz stepped up and singled home Williams to give the Terps a 6-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Booth walked with two outs. Stewart sent one deep down the right field line for a triple that scored Booth to conclude the scoring for the Terps.
