Fairfax, Va. - The softball team took two out of three games in the opening round of the George Mason Spring Clash Saturday in Fairfax. The Terps cruised to a 6-0 win over Siena in the first game and captured an 8-0 victory against Brown after dropping the middle game 2-1 to George Mason.
Double-threat Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) was a force on the mound and at the plate. Cyphert struck out nine and allowed four hits in a complete game shutout against Siena, and went 5-for-6 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBI in both of Maryland's wins. Outfielders Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.) and Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) had two hits apiece against Siena.
In the second game, Sweeney led off with a double and advanced to third on Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.)'s sacrifice bunt. Sweeney scored Maryland's only run on a suicide squeeze bunt single by Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.). Starting pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) allowed six hits in the loss.
Freshman Jessica Aditays took the win in the third game. She held Brown to one hit in five innings of work. Six of the Terps' eight runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Maryland will take on Siena Sunday morning to kick off Day 2 action at the George Mason Spring Clash in Fairfax.
