NEWARK, Del. - Catcher Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) led the Terp offensive attack going 4-for-7 with five RBI as Maryland (11-8) swept a doubleheader from Delaware (2-10) in Newark on Thursday afternoon.
The Terps took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game and kept building on it for an 8-0 victory over the Blue Hens. In the second game, Maryland put four runs on the board in the second inning to pad a 7-3 win.
In the first inning of the first game, Maryland scored its three runs all with two outs. Third baseman Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) walked and stole second base, causing Delaware to pitch around first baseman Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.). Leiter crossed the plate on an error before Radford singled home Pickeral. Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) also contributed a RBI single in the inning.
Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) drove in two runs with a double to left center during the second inning of the second game. Later on in the inning, Radford singled in two more runners to secure the Maryland victory.
Leiter ended up 2-for-5 in the twinbill and scored five Maryland runs. Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) allowed two hits and struck out eight in five shutout innings during the first game. Freshman Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took the win in the second game after pitching out of trouble in the bottom of the fifth. The second game was called in the top of the sixth inning due to darkness. Maryland had bases loaded with two outs at the time.
Maryland softball will be in action Friday afternoon when the Terps travel to Philadelphia to take on La Salle (4-4) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
