MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Sarde Stewart went 4-4, had 3 RBIs and hit her first home run of the season in the 10th inning to lead the Univeristy of Maryland softball team to a 4-3 victory in 10 innings over Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Saturday. Later in the day, the Terps' Kerry Hickey scored the winning run in the eighth inning to defeat Elon, 5-4.
The Terps (5-1) struck first in the opening game when Niki Lau opened the game with a single and scored on a Stewart single. The Lady Chanticleers (2-5) tied the game in the sixth when Verity Long-Droppert hit a home run to right-center field off Sarah Dooley.
In the eighth inning, the Terps' Jenny Belak was placed on second base per the international tie-breaker rule which applies to extra-inning games and moved to third on Kerry Hickey's sacrifice bunt. Stewart singled Belak home, but Coastal Carolina responded in the bottom of the inning when Allison Cantrell singled home Laicole Walker to tie the game.
Lau was placed at second base in the 10th and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Belak. Lau scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Hickey. Steward stepped up to the plate next and homered to left field off Ashley Frederick (2-5), who had pitched the entire game.
In the bottom of the 10th, Coastal Carolina's Ashley Pedersen scored on a Brittany Birnbaum single, but winning pitcher Meredith Nelles (1-0) got Long-Droppert to pop out to end the game. Nelles finished with seven strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings. Maryland's starting pitcher Hickey struck out five in 3-2/3 innings of work.
The second game of the day started similar to the first with the Terps scoring in the first inning. Breanna Shaw doubled to right-center field and scored on an error on a ball hit by Stewart to third base.
In the bottom of the inning, Elon (3-1) loaded the bases against starting pitcher Dooley before Nelles came into the game and forced two straight Phoenix pop-ups to end the threat. Nelles pitched 4-1/3 innings and stuck out four.
The Terps scored two more in the third inning when Belak singled and reached third on a fielding error on a ball hit by Shaw. Shaw stole second base and Belak scored on catcher Debbie Ziegler's error. Shaw advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Stewart sacrifice fly to right field.
Elon battled back in the fifth inning when Rabecca Rijavec scored on a sacrifice fly by Allison Hartman. Patti Weber and Caitlin McGowan scored to tie the game at three on a Pam Delpizzo's single that was misplayed in left field.
The Terps' Shaw was placed at second in the eighth inning, and scored on a Hickey single. Brittany Beesho double to left center to move Hickey to third, and Hickey scored on a passed ball for the winning run. Delpizzo (1-1) took the loss for the Phoenix.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Rijavec singled home Brandi Jones, who was placed at second base at the beginning of the inning. Dooley (2-1), who came back into the game to pitch in the sixth inning, got McGowan to fly out to end the game.
The three-way doubleheader continues Sunday as the Terps face Elon and Coastal Carolina at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively. Live stats are available for the games at this link.
