Softball Hosts Terrapin Invitational

THIS WEEK: Maryland, which captured the 1998 Pirate Classic tournament title, continues tournament play this weekend, hosting its first annual Terrapin Invitational. Maryland welcomes Princeton, Drexel and UMBC to College Park.

PIRATE CLASSIC RECAP: Maryland handed Delaware a 6-1 defeat to capture the East Carolina Pirate Classic title. The Terps recorded a 5-1 record at the Classic, losing only to Towson. Maryland collected wins over UMBC twice, George Mason and Delaware twice. The Terps enter this weekend sporting an 8-3 record. Kelly Shipman, Jennifer Potzman and Tisha Killian were all named to the all-tournament team.

HOT BATS: Maryland is hitting .290 as a team, and five of the Terrapin starters are hitting over .300. Freshman shortstop Jennifer Potzman leads the team in hitting as she has posted a .438 average with one home run and 14 hits. Junior pitcher/infielder Kelly Shipman also has 14 hits and is hitting .424. She also has three home runs and seven RBI. Her three home runs are a team-high and school record.

ANOTHER PERFECT GAME: Junior pitcher/infielder Kelly Shipman pitched her second perfect game of her career last Friday against Maryland-Baltimore County. In five innings pitched, she struck out five of the 15 batters faced. She currently owns a .97 ERA and sports a 4-2 record. In 37 innings pitched, Shipman has struck out 52 batters. She was this week's nominee for ACC Pitcher of the Week.

PUTTIN' ON THE "POTZ"MAN: Freshman Jennifer Potzman, an all-tournament team selection at last weekend's Pirate Classic, is this week's nominee for ACC Player of the Week. She hit .500 in the Terps' six games, recorded three doubles, one triple and had eight RBI. She scored four runs and had nine runs in her 18 at bats. A lofty baserunner, as well, she was 4-for-5 in stolen bases.

ON THE MOUND: Junior Tisha Killian owns a 4-1 record and has a 0.58 ERA. She has pitched 31 innings and has recorded two shutouts and 23 strikeouts. Junior Kelly Shipman owns a 4-2 record and has a 0.97 ERA. She has pitched 37 innings and has struck out 52. The two combined have a 0.79 ERA.

NEXT WEEK: Maryland travels to Delaware on Tuesday, March 10 for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader. On Thursday, March 12, the Terps travel to Baltimore for a doubleheader with Morgan State. On Saturday, March 14, the Terps meet Towson again in Baltimore, and return home on Sunday to host Maryland-Eastern Shore at 2 p.m.

HEAD COACH GINA LAMANDRE: Maryland head coach Gina LaMandre is in her fourth year as head coach of the Terps, and owns a 82-83-1 overall record. LaMandre guided the Terps to a share of the 1997 ACC title, and was rewarded by her peers as the Speedline/NSCA Coach of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic region, her second such honor in her three years at Maryland.
