FAU Kick-Off Classic Tournament Central

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team will open its 2010 season Friday at the Florida Atlantic Kick-Off Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. The Terrapins will play five games in three days, beginning Friday afternoon and ending Sunday. After months of hard work and preparation, the team is ready to take the field to begin the 2010 year.

"I'm excited to see the results of all the work we have put in throughout the past six months. This team has really had an amazing work ethic and drive throughout the fall training and into this spring. I'm excited to see this mentality compete," head coach Laura Watten said.

The Terps' first game of the weekend will be against Kentucky, who is receiving votes in this week's NFCA poll, Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Wildcats are coming off a 3-2 start last weekend at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State. Friday evening, the Terrapins will play tournament host 0-4 Florida Atlantic at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, the Terps' third game of the weekend will be against Pittsburgh at 11 a.m., who will also be opening its season this weekend. Maryland's second game on Saturday is against 3-2 Mississippi at 4 p.m. The Terrapins' fifth game of the weekend will be played Sunday, but time and opponent will be determined depending on standings.

The Terrapins earned a strong start to the 2009-2010 season by going 4-0 in a home fall tournament. The Maryland squad is made up of seven new faces and 12 returning letterwinners. The three seniors and five returning juniors, as well as a strong sophomore class, will look to help the newcomers transition to the Division I level.

"Our returnees are definitely helping out our new players. Each year we have grown a little more and achieved a little more," Watten said. "There is no substitute for actual Division I experience, however, our new players this year gained a good amount of exposure in the fall and are ready to compete like seasoned players."

Another newcomer for the Terrapins is assistant coach Yolanda McRae, who hails from ACC opponent Georgia Tech. will have updated information regularly on the Terps' trip to Florida this weekend. Live stats for all of the Terrapins' games this weekend will be available as well.
