COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland softball doubleheader against the Florida State Seminoles scheduled for Thursday in College Park has been cancelled due to heavy rains that struck the area this morning. The Terrapins (31-19, 2-3 ACC) finish the regular season in third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings and are next in action when they meet the second-seeded Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the conference tournament on Friday, May 10 at 5 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla.
Florida State, who locked up the No. 1 seed with a doubleheader sweep of Virginia on Tuesday, will face the winner of No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 Virginia, who open the tournament on May 10 at 3 p.m. The Seminoles finished with a 6-0 ACC record and are the only team in the league with games remaining, having scheduled doubleheaders at home on Saturday and Sunday.
With a 31-19 record, the Terrapins have posted the third-best regular season winning percentage in school history at .620. The Terrapins have won five of their last six games, including an April 27 sweep of defending league champion North Carolina that boosted Maryland to third place in the ACC standings. For her role in the Terps' victories, senior right-handed pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was named ACC Softball Player of the Week.
Other season honors for the Terps have included a conference Player of the Week nod for redshirt-sophomore Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.), who has made a tremendous comeback after missing the 2001 season recovering from elbow surgery. Sweeney, sophomore Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) and senior Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) all earned all-tournament honors at the 2002 George Mason Spring Clash.
