Terps' Pitcher Ranked Among NCAA Softball Leaders

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior pitcher Kelly Shipman (Huntingtown, Md./Northern), Maryland's all-time leader in strikeouts with 747, finished the 1998 season ranked 10th nationally with an 8.0 strikeouts per seven innings average. Shipman struck out 208 batters in 181.1 innings this season marking the third time during her three-year career that she had struck out over 200 batters in a single season.

In addition her strong season on the mound, Shipman established school records for batting average (.355), slugging percentage (.592) and home runs (8) while tying the school record for hits (54).

Maryland finished 23rd in the nation in home runs per game with a 0.46 average. Led by Shipman, the Terps slugged a school record 23 home runs.

The Terps finished with a 28-22 record this past season. The 28 victories marked a school record for the four-year old varsity program.
