MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of Maryland softball team scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and defeated Elon, 9-8, in eight innings on Sunday. Later in the day, Meredith Nelles pitched a complete game shutout as the Terps defeated Coastal Carolina 3-0.
With only one out and down three runs with the bases loaded, the Terps' Meghan Booth tripled to left field, scoring Kerry Hickey, Brittany Beesho, and Whitney Reigel to send the game to extra innings.
The Terps (7-1)struck first when Niki Lau scored on a groundout by Sarde Stewart, who leads the team with 6 RBIs. The Phoenix (4-2) scored three in the second, led by a two run Melanie Helterbran home run, but the Terps responded when Brittany Beesho scored on a sacrifice fly by Booth.
Elon added runs in each of the next three innings, highlighted by home runs by Tracey Dahlen and Brandi Jones, but Sarah Dooley (3-1) came into the game in the fifth inning and only allowed one hit over the next four innings to record the win.
Down by five, the Terps came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning when Lau led off with a single to third base. Breanna Shaw reached on an error, and then Lau scored on a Hickey single to left field. Bessho stepped up and singled to score Shaw. Krista Gould advanced Hickey and Bessho and Reigel walked to lead the way for Booth to be the hero.
In the eighth, Jenny Belak was placed on second base as per international tie-breaker rules and Lau walked. Belak scored when Shaw's hit was misplayed and scored on the throw home.
Against Coastal Carolina (2-7), Nelles (2-0) did not give up a hit until the fourth inning and after the Lady Chanticleers had the bases loaded; Nelles got Ashley Pedersen to groundout to end the threat. Nelles did not allow a hit the rest of the way, striking out nine for the game.
Going into a 0-0 tie in the seventh inning, the Terps' Beesho led off the inning with a home run to center field. Three Lady Chanticleer errors led to Maryland's other two runs in the inning, finishing with Gould singling home Schultz and Reigel.
The Terps return home for the first time this season with a doubleheader against UMBC on Thursday, Feb. 21 starting at 2 p.m.
