Maryland's Sweeney Garners ACC Softball Player Of The Week Honors

Feb. 11, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland centerfielder Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) earned ACC Softball Player of the Week honors after pacing the 2002 Terrapins in their opening weekend. The Terps' leadoff batter and starting centerfielder put in a complete all-around performance to earn her first career conference honor.

Sweeney, a redshirt sophomore, batted .533 for the week and posted a .611 on-base percentage as the Terrapins went 3-2 at the Bama Bash. She added two doubles, a triple, four runs scored, two RBI and four stolen bases in being named to the Bama Bash all-tournament team.

The ACC Player of the Week honor is the first garnered by a Terrapin since Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) and Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) were named conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, last April 16.

Maryland, which posted its fourth season-opening winning weekend in the program's eight-year history, is next in action at the Seminole Classic from Feb. 15-17 in Tallahassee, Fla. The Terps will face ACC-rival No. 15 Florida State for the first time this weekend, and will also meet Penn State, Syracuse, St. John's and Georgia.
