Marietta, Ga. - The Terrapins (14-9) couldn't pull out a victory against Georgia State after winning their opener against Michigan State at the Buzz Classic on Friday. Maryland took the first game of the day against the Spartans 4-1, but dropped the second game against Georgia State 4-3.
The Terps got out to an early 3-2 lead against Georgia State thanks to Kiesha Pickeral's (Hughesville, Md.) three doubles and Casey Leiter's (Lake Stevens, Wash.) two-run homer. Georgia State battled back and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when first baseman Lindsey Bryant scored on a passed ball.
In the top of the fifth, Maryland had an opportunity to put the winning run on the board. Leiter singled with one out in the inning, followed by Pickeral's double down the right field line. After making a pitching change, the Panthers intentionally walked power hitter Beth Radford(Dunkirk, Md.) to load the bases. Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) struck out and Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) grounded out to end Maryland's rally.
The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when catcher Shannon McCormick singled home the speedy Corrie Roberts. Maryland couldn't put together any scoring opportunities in the final innings to pull out the win. Freshman Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took the loss for Maryland.
In the first game, pitcher Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) struck out seven and allowed five hits in the win. Freshman shortstop Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.) sealed the victory in the sixth inning with her first homer of the season, a two-run blast to right field.
