Terps' Softball Ranked for First Time Since 1999

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team has been ranked 23rd in the Softball Collegiate Top 25 and 25th in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 poll. The Terps (15-1) have gotten off to a record start and currently holding a 12-game win streak. It is the first time Maryland softball has been ranked since the final poll of the 1999 season, when the Terps won 51 games.

    In addition to being ranked as a team, Meredith Nelles and Kerry Hickey swept the ACC softball weekly awards for the week of Feb. 25, winning Pitcher and Player of the week, respectively. Hickey was also named the university's Female Athlete of the Week.

    In four games last week, Nelles went 3-0 with a save, allowing zero earned runs in 14 1/3 innings pitched. Nelles is now 5-0 on the season with an ERA of 1.01 with 44 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings pitched.

    Hickey batted .500 in 18 at-bats with two home runs and 10 runs batted in. She hit a walk-off home run against Florida A&M and hit the game-winning double in the bottom of the sixth in a 1-0 victory over Central Florida in the final of the Knight Games Tournament.

    Hickey leads the ACC in hitting (.442), second in on-base percentage (.469) and slugging percentage (.721) and is tied for third in RBIs (15). Sarde Stewart is tied for ninth in the conference in batting (.333). In addition to batting, Hickey is sixth in ERA (1.24).

    The Terps are the only team in the ACC with an ERA under one (0.95). Nelles and Sarah Dooley are tied for third in the ACC in wins with five. Dooley is second in ERA (0.75), while Nelles is fourth with an ERA of 1.01. Nelles is also eighth in strikeouts with 44.
