TAMPA, Fla. - Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) struck out 13 en route to a complete game shutout and carried the Maryland softball team (7-5) to a 2-0 extra-inning win over Coastal Carolina.
Bettker silenced the Lady Chants' bats, allowing one hit in nine innings of work. The Terp offense took control of the game in the top of the ninth, when designated hitter Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) drove in two with a double to left field.
Maryland, which left a total of 12 runners on base, threatened to score in the top of the sixth with two outs. Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.), who replaced Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) on the base paths after she singled, tried to score from third on a Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) single, but was fired down at home by Coastal Carolina centerfielder Alexandra Prattes.
First baseman Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) had a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double.
The Terps' win on Sunday completed their undefeated trip to the USF-Holiday Inn Tournament in Tampa. Maryland's 7-2 victory over Seton Hall on Friday was the only other scheduled game that was not cancelled due to rain. The Terps have a week off and then will head back to Tampa March 7 to take on Michigan State and Brigham Young in the Speedline Invitational.
