Maryland Softball Travels to Delaware, Morgan State

THIS WEEK: Maryland travels to Delaware, Morgan State and Towson before returning home to host Maryland-Eastern Shore. The Terps meet the Fighting Blue Hens on Tuesday, Morgan State on Thursday and Towson on Saturday, and then host Maryland Eastern-Shore on Sunday. Game time on Sunday is scheduled for 2 p.m.

TERPS SPLIT IN OWN TOURNAMENT: Maryland, playing in its first-ever Terrapin Invitational, recorded a 2-1 win over Drexel and lost a 3-2 eight-inning decision to Princeton in first-day action. Sunday's games were canceled due to inclement weather.

DREXEL RECAP: Maryland juniors Amy Sandler and Tisha Killian each scored in the 2-1 win over Drexel. The Terps recorded 11 hits with freshman Jennifer Potzman and Christy Miller each posting an RBI. Junior pitcher Tisha Killian collected her fifth win of the season and allowed only one Drexel hit while striking out three batters.

PRINCETON RECAP: Maryland outhit the Tigers, 8-4, but couldn't get runners across home plate, and the Tigers broke a 1-1 tie, scoring two runs in the eighth inning. Junior Amy Sandler and sophomore Sarah Putnam each had two hits with Putnam adding an RBI. Junior pitcher Kelly Shipman allowed four hits; none of the Tigers' runs were earned, however. She struck out eight Tiger batters.

HOT BATS: Maryland is hitting .301 as a team, and five of the Terrapin starters are hitting over .300. Junior infielder/outfielder Amy Sandler leads the team in hitting as she has posted a .412 average with 14 hits and five RBI. Freshman Jennifer Potzman has a team-high 16 hits and 14 RBI and is hitting .410. Junior pitcher/infielder Kelly Shipman has scored a team-high 13 runs and also has three home runs and seven RBI. Her three home runs are a team-high and school record.

ANOTHER PERFECT GAME: Junior pitcher/infielder Kelly Shipman pitched her second perfect game of her career against Maryland-Baltimore County on Feb. 27. In five innings pitched, she struck out five of the 15 batters faced. She currently owns a 0.82 ERA and sports a 4-3 record. In 44 innings pitched, Shipman has struck out 60 batters.

ON THE MOUND: Junior Tisha Killian owns a 5-1 record and has a 0.47 ERA. She has pitched 38 innings and has recorded two shutouts and 26 strikeouts. Junior Kelly Shipman owns a 4-3 record and has a 0.82 ERA. She has pitched 44 innings and has struck out 60. The two combined have a 0.66 ERA compared to the opponents' 6.29.

NEXT WEEK: Maryland travels to Long Island next Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m. contest before traveling south to the Winthrop Tournament. The Terps will play Bucknell on Thursday, March 19 before opening play at the Winthrop Tournament.

HEAD COACH GINA LAMANDRE: Maryland head coach Gina LaMandre is in her fourth year as head coach of the Terps, and owns a 83-84-1 overall record. LaMandre guided the Terps to a share of the 1997 ACC title, and was rewarded by her peers as the Speedline/NSCA Coach of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic region, her second such honor in her three years at Maryland.
