Altamonte Springs, Fla. - The U.S. National Softball team used two big innings to defeat the University of Maryland softball team 7-0 in an exhibition game on Saturday night. The game was part of Team USA's Bound 4 Beijing Tour as they prepare for the Summer Olympics in China later this year.
Team USA's Andrea Duran mishandled Jenny Belak's sharply hit ball to lead off the game. After a strikeout, Sarde Stewart stepped up and singled up the middle for the first hit surrendered by Team USA in over five games. USA starter Cat Osterman then struck out the next eight batters.
After giving up three runs in the first inning, Maryland (12-1) starter Sarah Dooley did not give up a hit in the second inning including a strikeout.
Lindsey Wright replaced Dooley in the third inning and pitched two perfect innings, including a superb running catch by Belak in left field off the bat of Kelly Kretschman. Wright finished the game with 4 innings pitched and retired her last four batters.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Crystal Bustos blasted a three-run home run that measured over 300 feet to cap a four-run inning give Team USA a 7-0 lead.
Team USA's Alicia Hollowell came on to pitch in fourth inning and pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts. Jennie Finch came on to pitch a perfect seventh inning.
