COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team looks to continue its early season surge as they play host to Pittsburgh on Wednesday in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The 23rd-ranked Terps (18-1), who currently hold a 15 game winning streak, won the Maryland Invitational last weekend defeating Seton Hall, Columbia and Fordham. The Terps are now ranked 23rd in both polls after moving up two spots in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Poll.
Terps senior Sarde Stewart was named ACC Co-Player of the Week for the week ending March 9. Stewart leads the Terps in runs batted in with 20 and home runs with three. Her .385 batting average is tops in the ACC. Stewart also leads the ACC with a slugging percentage of .673.
Wednesday could be a record-setting day for senior Jenny Belak. The right fielder from Sierra Madre, Calif. needs only one stolen base to break the record for career steals. She is just two shy of tying fifth place for career hits with 181.
The Panthers (9-7) come to Robert E. Taylor Stadium having won two of their last three in the University of Kansas tournament. Pitt lost to Kansas, 4-3 in 10 innings, but defeated Western Illinois twice, 4-3 in eight innings on Saturday and 7-0 on Sunday.
Pittsburgh has been led by pitcher Cory Berliner, who has a 6-3 record with an ERA of 0.95 in 66 1/3 innings pitched. The Panthers' bats have been led by Sam Card, who has belted two home runs and is batting .340 on the season.
