CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Maryland softball team opened up its ACC schedule on Friday evening, falling to #22/24 North Carolina, 2-1. UNC starter Danielle Spaulding pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts to go to 8-1. Maryland starter Sarah Dooley fell to 9-5 on the year with the loss. UNC is now 3-1 in ACC play.
In the top of the sixth inning down 2-0, Terps' senior Sarde Stewart singled in Breanna Shaw, who had two hits on the day, to cut the lead to one. Spaulding then retired three straight to end the threat from the Terps.
UNC's Cassie Palmer led off the first inning with a home run down the left field line. In second inning, Alyssa Francona doubled before Palmer singled home pinch runner Dani Manko.
Dooley settled down after that as she only allowed one base runner over the next two innings. In the fifth inning, Dooley induced Spaulding into a ground out with the bases loaded to end the threat.
The series between the Terps and Tar Heels continues tomorrow with a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live at WMUCsports.com.
