COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Univeristy of Maryland softball team travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to open its ACC season against North Carolina in a three-game series starting Friday at 5 p.m. The Terps come into the series with a record of 22-4, the best start in program history. Maryland finishes the series with a doubleheader against the Tar Heels (24-6) on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
The Terps, who went 8-12 in ACC play last season, are led by senior Jenny Belak who broke two school records in the Maryland Spring Break Classic. She now has the all-time marks for stolen bases (47) and triples (11). Belak is batting .370 this year with 11 steals.
Maryland comes in with two pitchers tied for second in the ACC in wins with Sarah Dooley and Meredith Nelles. Both have nine wins with 72 strikeouts each, while Dooley has an ERA of 1.41 and Nelles has a 1.44 ERA.
The Tar Heels are led by Jessica Jacobs, who is batting .345 with six home runs. Pitcher Danielle Spaulding leads the pitching staff with a 7-1 record and a 0.82 ERA.
Last season, the Terps took the first game in College Park, Md., 3-2 in eight innings, before UNC took the last two, 4-0, and 7-2. The Tar Heels lead the all-time series 28-12.
