Dominant Pitching Lifts Maryland Softball Over George Mason In Doubleheader Sweep

April 17, 2002

Box Score 1, Box Score 2

Fairfax, Va. - Senior hurler Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomore fireballer Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) each pitched two-hit shutouts Wednesday for a doubleheader sweep of George Mason. Bettker (11-10) struck out seven in the first game, which the Terps won 5-0. Cyphert (9-3) no-hit the Patriots for 5-2/3 innings en route to a 4-0 victory in the second game.

Center fielder Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) went an impressive 6-for-8 on the day with two triples, four runs scored, and two RBI. Right fielder Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) also had a 3-for-7 day at the plate. Sophomore Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) drove in three runs between the two games.

Maryland's victories over George Mason avenged a 2-1 loss to the Patriots earlier this season during the George Mason Spring Clash. The Terrapins have won 16 of their last 18 contests against the Patriots. Maryland softball will resume action on Saturday, March 20 when the Virginia Cavaliers travel to College Park for an ACC doubleheader showdown at 1 p.m. Seniors Bettker, Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) and Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) will be honored for their dedication to Maryland softball as part of the doubleheader.
