CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Maryland softball team fell to No. 23 North Carolina 4-0 Sunday afternoon in the series finale between the two Atlantic Coast Conference teams. Despite the loss on Sunday, the Terps (27-18, 5-9) still claimed their first series win over the Tar Heels (35-15, 9-9) since 2002 with wins in games one and two on Saturday.
After they had 12 hits in the two games on Saturday, the Terps were held to just two hits on the day by Tar Heel pitcher Danielle Spaulding. Senior Alex Schultz, who is batting .433 on the year had both hits for the Terrapins.
Sophomore Kendra Knight started in the circle for the Terrapins. She notched eight strikeouts in her 4.0 innings, did not give up a walk and allowed three runs, just one earned.
Junior Kerry Hickey took over in the fifth inning and allowed just two hits and did not allow a walk either. Hickey had a strikeout in her two innings in the circle.
The Tar Heels scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Kelli Wheeler hit a single to left field. Chelsey Butler pinch ran for Wheeler and advanced to second, then third, on a passed ball and a wild pitch. Constance Orr drove in Butler with a single to right field.
In the third inning, North Carolina added two more runs. Anna Roberts reached on a Terrapin error. Brittany McKinney cleared the bases with a home run to left centerfield.
Christine Knauer singled to open the bottom of the fifth inning. Roberts followed with a double to advance Knauer to third. Knauer came home on a wild pitch by Hickey to finalize the score at 4-0.
The Terrapins claimed the series win, taking the first two games on Saturday. They had not beaten the Tar Heels since 2007 and had not clinched a series since 2002.
Next for Maryland is a series at North Carolina State next Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and Sunday's single game begins at 1 p.m.
